Presenters: Randy Townsend and Marlo Green of PLOS Juneteenth In 2021, President Biden passed historic legislation honoring Juneteenth as a federal United States holiday. Without much time to prepare, many organizations acknowledged the holiday with a day off from work but didn’t connect the relevance to their activities. In the shadows of its second year, ISMTE’s September workshop will explore America’s institution of slavery, its influence on the publishing industry, the significance of Juneteenth and why observance of this holiday should be celebrated by all Americans and recognized as only the first step in our journey towards diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
Presenters: Shaina Lange and Racquel Jemison of ACS will discuss general society initiatives around diversity, equity, inclusion and respect initiatives, products, programs and services with more specific initiatives around editor training/resources and improving reviewer and editor/EAB diversity.
How ACS is Embracing and Advancing Inclusion in Chemistry The American Chemical Society’s core values of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Respect (DEIR) were integrated into a newly added strategic goal and led to the creation of the Office of DEIR in 2021. The goal of “Embracing and advancing inclusion in chemistry” requires the contributions and efforts of all ACS volunteer leaders, authors, editors, reviewers, and staff. The Office of DEIR serves as a central hub, providing resources and tools to integrate our core values into ACS products, programs, services, and processes. An excellent example of this integration is with ACS Publications. Scholarly publishers play a critical role as facilitators of the peer review and publishing processes, and ACS Publications is committed to advancing DEIR in all aspects of the publishing process. This presentation will highlight key initiatives ACS Publications is undertaking to address systemic biases, invite and elevate diverse perspectives, and create a more inclusive culture for the chemistry community. This is a workshop you do not want to miss!
