Manually adding new data to a tracking document can take hours, and copying and pasting across various tabs and files is likely to introduce errors. Wouldn’t it be easier if Excel would ingest the raw data from your submission system report and update your document automatically? Great news, with just a little bit of setup, it can! This Office Hours event is part of the Early Career Committee’s 101 Series, where we cover the skills and knowledge needed for the day-to-day work of scholarly publishing professionals. Office Hours: How much more can we take on? Balancing growth in responsibilities and tasks As we push for more content submitted – invited submissions, supplemental/special issues – and, don’t get me wrong, we want more content submitted. However, this means more work for Editorial offices but often no increase in staffing/working hours to off-set this growth in workload. As Editorial offices (Editorial Assistant, Managing Editor, Editorial Manager, Journal Administrator, Peer Review/Submission Administrator, etc.), we already have a base list of responsibilities and tasks pertaining to our role for our journals: to get a manuscript from submission to final decision, including pre- and post- submission tasks. But with more things needed to be checked in the initial submission checks (as well as all the usual initial checks but including COI, disclosure statements, potential paper mill articles), more tasks in the peer review process expected of administrators (checking and inviting reviewers, even selecting/suggesting) and the time-consuming act of chasing (chasing Editors for their late assignments, late reviewers for their reports, late authors for their submissions), multiple that workload by the increasing content submitted and published. I have a question to explore: what ways are Editorial offices combating a finite amount of time versus growing responsibilities and content? Time may be a fixed entity – as much as we may wish, we cannot invent more time – but workload grows.

Testimonials from Past Participants Lisa Pelzek-Braun, Managing Editor, Journal of Palliative Medicine, Ohio Health Home Care
I joined ISMTE last year, though I've I’ve followed the organization since 2012, and was excited to attend my first conference this year. I’m not new to the field – been Managing Editor of Journal of Palliative Medicine since the inception in 1997 – but lack peer connection and work largely in a vacuum within a healthcare system. I learned so much in a short time at the North American Conference in Durham, NC. My biggest take-aways were the evolutions in publishing: open peer review, open research, AI and Blockchain. The discussion on Plan S was also thought-provoking. Another wonderful component of this meeting – the speakers are the members and so accessible: had a lively discussion at breakfast with a speaker and other members on Day 2 about the previous day’s sessions on the variances and definitions of Editorial Boards. Nice to spend time with colleagues who speak my language. Jocelyn Dawson, Journals Marketing Manager, Duke University Press
I just attended my first ISMTE meeting. Although I work in journals marketing and many conference attendees come from an editorial background, I was thrilled to find an abundance of interesting content relevant to my work. I learned about new tools in the journals world and attended sessions on generally helpful professional topics (career, inclusion). The environment is collegial, and the conference was a great place to meet other people who care about the work of journal publishing. |
