Speakers

Heather Tierney, COPE Council member, and Managing Editor, Publication Ethics at the American Chemical Society
After completing her Ph.D.in Chemistry at Tufts University, Heather L. Tierney joined the Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in 2010 as the Managing Editor for ACS Nano and Nano Letters. In 2016, Heather is undertaking a new role at ACS, as Managing Editor, Journals and Ethics Policy. In addition to managing the ACS’s two flagship Reviews journals, Accounts of Chemical Research and Chemical Reviews, Heather helps to provide guidance on best practice in publication ethics and policy in accordance with industry standards as set by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and other external agencies.

Matt Hodgkinson, COPE Council member and Research Integrity Manager at UK Research Integrity Office (UKRIO)
After receiving a degree in Biological Sciences from Oxford and a Master's in Genetics from Cambridge, Matt started in Open Access journal publishing in 2003 with BioMed Central in London as an editor handling peer review on the BMC-series journals. He became a Senior Editor and Publishing Editor, and worked on the journals BMC Biology and Trials and the launches of BMC Research Notes, BMC Medical Genomics, and BMC Systems Biology.

He joined the Public Library of Science in Cambridge in 2010 as an Associate Editor and then Senior Editor on PLOS ONE, screening submissions, helping academic editors, training editors in critical appraisal, and working on clinical trials, article-level metrics, publication ethics, and reporting. Matt moved to Hindawi in London in 2016 as Head of Research Integrity, overseeing the publication ethics processes and policies. He was then Head of Editorial Policy and Ethics until February 2022.

Matt is Research Integrity Manager at UK Research Integrity Office (UKRIO), and the Treasurer of the European Association of Science Editors and an AuthorAID mentor.
