Keynote Speaker

John Bohannon, PhD

"Journals in the Post-Sci-Hub World"
Thursday, August 11, 2016 - 9:15 AM - 10:00 AM

John Bohannon is a contributing correspondent for Science magazine. His reporting from the Gaza Strip won the Reuters-IUCN Media Award for Excellence in Environmental Reporting from Europe. He is coauthor with Isabella Rosselini of “Green Porno” (winner of 4 Webby awards) and “Animals Distract Me” (official selection, 2011 Sundance Film Festival). His study of people’s inability to distinguish pet food from paté caused Stephen Colbert to eat cat food on television. He is the founder of the Science/AAAS "Dance Your PhD" contest. He has a PhD in molecular biology from the University of Oxford.

Journals in the Post-Sci-Hub World

Change is coming to academic publishing. It was only a matter of time before pirate file-sharing made nearly all scientific papers free to read--for everyone. Will the publishing industry adapt the way that the music and movie industry has? Will we be accessing academic research on a platform like iTunes for $0.99 per paper? A research-streaming service like Spotify that costs $10 per month? Will all journals become Open Access instead, either green or gold, but with embedded advertising? Then again, there is powerful inertia in publishing. Bizarrely, the consumers in this industry are also the producers of its content, with careers that depend on journal reputations. So perhaps academic publishing won't change quickly. (Don't count on it.)
