Statistics helps us extract knowledge -- news we can use -- from data. Scientific studies make heavy use of statistics, but what are statistical techniques really telling us? In this talk, I'll explain the origins of some common statistical methods and describe the types of questions they're meant to answer. I'll also discuss some ways in which statistical methods can lead to incorrect outcomes. Finally, if time allows, I'll share some thoughts from our experience with peer reviewers and individual researchers here at Research Square that may help inform how papers with statistical content can be evaluated.
