About Resource Central         Share Your Knowledge        Best Practices Newsletter
The International Society of Managing and Technical Editors has launched a series of best practice newsletters aimed for editorial office staff. Each newsletter summarizes a subject, explains its importance within the peer review process, and outlines what benefits a journal could derive from addressing it. Each topic review is supplemented by a series of step-by-step instructions and screenshots from commonly used online peer review management systems. The intention is to empower readers to become familiar with important operational practices and then provide instructions for simple, and efficient, implementation. For some topics the newsletter will be supplemented with additional ISMTE resources such as related articles from Editorial Office News and features from our Resource and Training sections. These additional features will be made freely available to members.

In this issue:

How to improve the Quality of Reviews: Matching manuscripts and reviewers
Editors place a substantial portion of responsibility for the quality of their journals in reviewers’ hands, asking them to help identify the most appropriate submissions for publication. The editorial office can facilitate better reviews by evaluating and streamlining the peer-review process, which includes carefully considering how manuscripts are matched with reviewers.

How to Improve the Quality of Reviews Using Editorial Manager
One of the greatest challenges facing peer review publications is the need to find and manage peer reviewers. In Editorial Manager (EM), reviewer information is conveniently retrieved from a database using numerous query options including: areas of expertise, past performance, address, etc.
