    • A. Copyediting 101Katharine O'Moore-Klopf, ELS, will lead a discussion on the basics of copyediting, its role in the overall process of managing a journal and its importance to you.
    • B. Copyright 101 Joseph J. Barker, Attorney, John Wiley & Sons, will lead a discussion on the basics of copyright, when do you and when do you not need to get permission, fair use, use of material from the web and more.

  • 1 pm - 2:15 pm - Journal Metrics - The Impact Factor and Everything Else. What the latest journal metrics are, what you need to know, how people, including your customers and your authors use them, and where's it all going. Iain Craig, Analysis Manager - Bibliometrics, for Wiley-Blackwell, will give a presentation and lead a group discussion on this critical topic.

  • 2:45 pm - 3:45 pm - Tips and Tools for More Effectively Managing Submissions from International AuthorsPhilippa J. Benson, Ph.D. will lead a discussion on this critically important issue facing all editorial offices.
  • 3:45 pm - 5:00 pm - Exchange Forum - One of the most popular parts of our meeting. "The floor is open" - and this is your opportunity to ask your fellow managing and technical editors for advice on those burning questions you have but haven't had a good resource to go to for possible solutions and answers. Scientific fraud and misconduct, peer review systems, diplomacy with authors and reviewers, career issues and additional topics may be covered.

Wednesday August 4

  • 8:00 am - 8:30 am – Breakfast Discussion with Past President Jason Roberts: The EQUATOR Network - How Editorial Offices of biomedical and science journals can help improve the quality of manuscripts for publication.
  • (Note: Those not wishing to attend the breakfast discussion session can eat breakfast at their leisure)
  • 8:30 am - 10 am – Social Media – Facebook, Twitter, Podcasting. As a managing editor what do you need to know about these to better serve your journal’s needs? Are you an expert? Then come and share your experiences with others. Joy Moore, Vice President, Global Partnerships of Seed Media Group, will give a presentation and lead a group discussion.
  • 10 am - 10:15 am – Coffee Break
  • 10:15 am - 11:45 am – EXCEL - Tom McClung will give a hands-on session on all the tricks of the trade you need to know to make a great spreadsheet for your journal reports. Bring your laptop!
  • 11:45 am - 12:15 pm - Wrap Up and Closing Remarks – Glenn Collins and ISMTE President Elizabeth Blalock
